A Little Life description

A Little Life – Adapted from the Booker Prize nominated novel

James Norton stars as the mysteriously troubled lawyer Jude in director Ivo van Hove’s dazzling adaptation of A Little Life, a play that is no stranger to critical acclaim. This is an adaptation of the epic, Booker Prize nominated novel and the play’s English language premier, on stage at the Harold Pinter Theatre for a limited run in 2023.

James Norton delighted audiences in TV’s Happy Valley and Grantchester, now he stars in this classy premier directed by the visionary Ivo van Hove of Network and A View from the Bridge fame. The book sold more than a million copies, a massive bestseller for the author Hanya Yanagihara, who also wrote the delightful ‘To Paradise’.

A Little Life made the Booker Prize Shortlist in 2015. It was a finalist in the National Book Award for Fiction, won the Kirkus Prize in Fiction for 2015 and in 2016 scooped the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction. It was shortlisted in the 2016 Women’s Prize for Fiction, and the International Dublin Literary Award.

The much-anticipated production also stars Luke Thompson (Bridgerton, Hamlet), Omari Douglas (It’s A Sin, Constellations), Zach Wyatt (The Witcher, I and You), Elliot Cowan (The Crown, 2:22 A Ghost Story), Zubin Varla (Tammy Faye, Equus), Nathalie Armin (Force Majeure, The Doctor), and Emilio Doorgasingh (Best of Enemies, The Kite Runner).

What's the story behind A Little Life?

You’ll meet four college friends in New York City: the aspiring actor Willem, the successful architect Malcolm, the struggling artist JB, and the impressive lawyer Jude. Despite their friendship being slowly torn apart by a poisonous blend of ambition, addiction, and pride the men are all connected by their love for Jude, fascinated by his mysterious past. When Jude’s secrets emerge the friends finally understand that knowing Jude St Francis means you also understand the limitless potential of love in the face of life.
