A Mirror - Subversive, complicated and contemporary
A Mirror thrilled audiences at the Almeida Theatre in 2023. Next it transfers to the West End's Trafalgar Theatre for February 2024, again starring the wonderful Jonny Lee Miller, and we predict tickets are going to sell out fast.
What's the story behind A Mirror?
Written by Sam Holcroft and Directed by Jeremy Herrin, The Mirror is described as ‘An ingenious drama’ by the Financial Times. Awarded 4 stars by the Guardian, Observer, Time Out, Independent, Mail on Sunday, Metro, and The Stage, it’s proving a big draw for lovers of serious theatre, and the play’s message is wholly relevant to the world we live in today. A Mirror theatre tickets land you in the midst of a complex plot that takes some unravelling, with a dramatic reveal at the end.
About A Mirror
Jonny Lee Miller delighted us in Trainspotting. Tanya Reynolds thrilled us in Sex Education. And Micheal Ward from Top Boy is also involved in Sam Holcroft’s explosive new play. With themes of censorship, authorship and free speech, it’s an unusually influential piece of theatre.
The play features an author and performers who are hoping to stay under the radar. The play they’re performing has been refused a permit by the Minister of Culture in a sinister dictatorship, but they’ve found a licensed venue for a wedding, and they’re putting the play on while a look-out checks for spies.
Every time there’s a knock on the door or a siren wails, the actors have to quick-change the event back into a wedding. At first the main actors have two identities each, which they jump between But it soon becomes clear there’s a third person involved in each of the main characters as well...
This play is subversive on so many levels. It’s a black comedy about the absurdity of tyrants who think they’re patrons of the arts. It takes a poke at art in general, and its habit of tidying away the messes of real life. And it could also be seen as taking the mickey out of the process of writing and performing a play.
The full cast comprises Sara Houghton, Jonny Lee Miller, Aaron Neil, Tanya Reynolds, Geoffrey Streatfeild, Miriam Wakeling and Micheal Ward. The creative team members are the writer Sam Holcroft, Director Jeremy Herrin, Set and Costume Designer Max Jones and Lighting Designer Azusa Ono. Nick Powell is the Composer and Sound Designer and Jonathan Holby the Fight Director, Jessica Ronane CDG the Casting Director and Clare Foster the Intimacy Director. Alice White is the Voice Coach and Cáit Canavan is the Costume Supervisor.
