What's the story? Roll back time to spring 1912, when the wealthy Birling family are at home, having just eaten dinner, celebrating the engagement of their daughter Sheila to Gerald Croft, son of Sir George Croft and the heir to a successful northern family business. But when the maid Edna opens the door to an unexpected guest, Police Inspector Goole, who is on a mission to solve the mysterious death of a young woman, he forces the family's secrets into the open.
The Inspector’s shocking revelations shatter the family's foundations. But they also challenge us all to examine our consciences, which is one of the reasons it's so very compelling. Stephen Daldry’s 1992 revival packed the National Theatre, with Kenneth Cranham playing the inspector's role. It won three Olivier Awards and two Evening Standard Awards before transferring to theatreland for a two year run. On Broadway Daldry's masterwork won four Tony Awards and seven Drama Desk Awards, then toured the world before a second West End run, this time for six years.
