Bad Jews description
Bad Jews – The controversial hit comedy
Bad Jews playwright Joshua Harmon is the creator of Significant Other, Admissions, Skintight, and Ivanka: A Medea For Right Now. This production, a revival of the hugely popular original, will be directed by Jon Pashley. Bad Jews is presented by Simon Friend, Gavin Kalin, and Keren Misgav.
What's the story behind Bad Jews?
This is Joshua Harmon’s debut play. When it arrived in London during 2015, Transport For London banned the poster. A dark family comedy, the action is led by the cousins Liam and Daphna. Their granddad Poppy has just died, and the cousins are staying in Liam’s tiny New York apartment before the funeral. They’re joined by Liam’s non-Jewish girlfriend Melody and Liam’s younger brother, Jonah. Liam is ostentatiously irreligious, which winds the others up. Daphne is the ultimate in Jewishness, her cousin’s opposite. Both of them covet Poppy’s chai necklace, which he hid from the Nazis during his time at Auschwitz. The resulting super-heated discussions are completely hilarious.
About Bad Jews
This short run marks the play’s tenth anniversary. The world premiere took place in New York, in 2012. Described as a ‘ferocious’ play it has already wowed the West End twice, first in 2015 and then in 2016, following its UK premiere at the Ustinov Studio in Bath during 2014. The original production was directed by Michael Longhurst and designed by Richard Kent, with lighting design by Richard Howell and sound design by Adrienne Quartly. The creative team remains the same, and the casting will be announced nearer the time.
