July saw the announcement that British Hollywood actress Thandie Newton is set to make her West End debut this autumn, starring in Death and the Maiden.
The 38 year old BAFTA winner has featured in a number of high profile motion pictures from The Academy awarding winning 'Crash' and appearing opposite Will Smith in 'The Pursuit of Happiness', to 'Mission Impossible II' and British comedy 'Run Fatboy, Run'. As such her theatrical debut is hotly anticipated.
Newton will take up the role of Paulina Salas in the piece by Chilean playwright Ariel Dorfman which is based on the story of a South American political prisoner who is abused by a group of miscreants led by the sadistic Doctor Miranda.
Years later by chance her husband Giraldo Escobar is assisted by the doctor having suffered a burst tyre and receives a lift home from him. Having never seen the evil Doctor's face at the time but recognising his voice and mannerisms, Paulina takes Miranda captive and puts him on trial with her husband Gerardo acting as his lawyer.
Having debuted at London's Royal Court Theatre in 1991 and earned Glen Close a Tony award on Broadway in 1992, Death of the Maiden will be revived at The Comedy Theatre from October 13th.
