by Kate Goldstone on Saturday 1 March 2014, 10:43 am in Top London Shows
This month’s top 12 shows features a whole load of stage masterpieces that are so popular they’re a regular feature in our chart. We also have an exciting new winner, Skylight, in at number seven, opening early summer 2014 and already causing a positive stir - no surprise really, with Bill Nighy and Carey Mulligan at the helm. We’re still selling discounted tickets for Twelve Angry Men and there’s an ongoing ‘no booking fee’ offer on The Lion King, plus as much as 38% off tickets for We Will Rock You, all perfect for cut-price entertainment this Easter.
Number one for two months running, The Lion King is on special offer right now with no booking fee until 27th March. The show debuted in the USA in 1997 and is now Broadway's fourth longest-running show as well as the highest grossing Broadway musical of all time, generating more than a billion dollars in revenue. It first took to the London stage in 1999 and is still going strong. If you haven’t been yet… go!

Last month’s number twelve, this taut drama has zoomed up our chart, partly because of our special 25% off ticket offer and partly because it’s such an excellent production, a tense and exciting play dealing with a vital court case that’s far from open and shut. Will the young man on trial receive justice, or will he be a victim of the jury’s preconceptions?
Twelve Angry Men Tickets
This tremendously silly, hugely popular, fun and entertaining musical has hopped up our chart yet again, back like a yo-yo from number eight last month. We’re still offering as much as 38% off ticket prices, which has helped. But the sheer quality of the music, stage sets, acting, singing and choreography are doing most of the hard work for us. Have you experienced it yet?
We Will Rock You Tickets
Down from number two last month, Angela Lansbury continues to deliver thrills and spills playing the role of the eccentric Madame Arcati, in a reprise of her stunning 2009 Tony Award-winning role. Noel Coward would have been proud of this fabulous performance of his classic comedy, a romp rich in ghostly goings on, feuding wives and emotional mischief. A truly unworldly comedy!
Blithe Spirit Tickets
Number nine in our top 12 London shows last month, the Phantom has surged back up to number five. A regular visitor to our chart, it seems to hit theatre lovers in a very human place. Passionate, romantic, dark and gothic, it’s a visual feast full of gorgeous sets and scenery, a treat for your ears. Add a plot that has inspired millions and you get a show that deserves a place on everyone’s theatrical bucket list.
Phantom of the Opera Tickets
Last month’s number three and now closed, this splendidly creepy drama revealed the terrible things that can happen when you decide it’s safe to tell all to a perfect stranger. Murder and mayhem ruled and the play was a huge hit. But it’s goodbye for now, until next time the show takes to the stage. Here’s a message to the cast - thanks for the entertainment. It has been amazing.
Strangers On A Train Tickets
Opening in June 2014, Skylight is already causing a stir and tickets are already steadily selling. There’s only three months to go before Carey Mulligan and Bill Nighy take the stage at Wyndhams Theatre for this David Hare classic about the schoolteacher Kyra Hollis, her older lover Tom Sergeant and their doomed and dangerous attempts at reconciliation. Drama, crisis, emotional warfare… this play has it all.

Who needs a plot when some clever creative person has strung together such a cool series of massive Michael Jackson hits? This show is all about the music, with choreography and vocals so like Jackson it may as well be the great man himself. Expect a fantasy of a two and a half hour-long concert celebrating the music of The Jackson 5 and Michael’s best-loved solo tunes. Breathtaking.
Thriller – Live Tickets
Our show of the month in February, The Bodyguard has leapt into a number eight position from nowhere. The ultimate in romance, it’s based on the smash hit film starring Beverley Knight and Tristan Gemmill. The latest news? The show won the 2013 Best New Musical award from What’s on Stage, a fitting accolade for a story that’s as irresistible now as the original movie was back then.

Last month’s number seven, Matilda continues to delight children and alarm parents, which is exactly what the children’s author Roald Dahl intended. The grown-ups are hateful, the children eventually win and everyone’s happy. Except Matilda’s awful parents. Your little ones will love this delightfully naughty tale about a little girl who deserves a much better family than the one she’s stuck with.

Classic British humour at its marvellously silly best, Jeeves and Wooster have hit number eleven this month, down from number six last time around. You’ll be crying with laughter at the antics of the famous pair, one a member of the English aristocracy and the other his long-suffering Butler. Matthew Macfadyen and Stephen Mangan are the stars of the show and your venue is the beautiful Duke of York's Theatre.

A musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, Wicked is based on the best-selling book by US author Winnie Holzman. It, in turn, is inspired by the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel ‘Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West’, where the writer extrapolates upon the classic The Wizard of Oz, exploring the life experiences that made the witches the women they eventually became. Fantastically popular with teens!
