Fans of the 2005 movie, Brokeback Mountain will be delighted to hear it's been adapted for the stage in a brand-new play. Making its world premiere at @sohoplace between May 10 till August 12 2023, this limited run will reunite director Jonathan Butterell with songwriter Dan Gillespie Sells (The Feeling) for the first time since their previous West End success, Everybody's Talking About Jamie.
The first ever premiere to run at @sohoplace since its opening in October 2022, the play is based on Annie Proulx's successful short story and is the playwriting debut of by Ashley Robinson.
About Brokeback Mountain
A tale of love and heartbreak that takes place over the course of 20 years, Brokeback Mountain follows herders Ennis and Jack, as they try to escape extreme poverty by accepting jobs together on Brokeback Mountain.
Set in 1960s Wyoming, the pair are from isolated communities with very conservative values, so when they unexpectedly form a loving connection, the consequences for themselves and their families cause both uplifting joy and devastating unhappiness.
The narrative is intertwined by country and western music to immerse you right into the heart of the rural location. With an original score by Dan Gillespie Sells, the music is performed by Eddi Reader and her band, made up of Sean Green (piano/MD), Meelie Traill (upright bass), Julian Jackson (chromatic harmonica) and BJ Cole (pedal steel guitar).
The running time for Brokeback Mountain is around 90 minutes with no interval and is recommended for audiences over the age of 16.
