Bronco Billy description
Bronco Billy – Based on Dennis Hackin’s brilliant movie
Bronco Billy is based on the popular 1980 movie written by Dennis Hackin and starring Clint Eastwood, who also directed. Now it’s been scripted for the stage as a vibrant musical, in the West End at Charing Cross Theatre thanks to a special arrangement with Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures.
This is an exciting award-winner of a new Wild West show, a wonderfully lively comedy musical starring the brilliant Emily Benjamin, darling of the West End, as Antoinette. The show is due at the West End’s Charing Cross Theatre from 23rd January to 7th April 2024, so hang onto your Stetsons and grab tickets to Bronco Billy The Musical as soon as they become available.
What's the story behind Bronco Billy?
Originally shown on stage in Los Angeles in 2019, Bronco Billy the musical won the Ovation Awards for Best Book for an Original Musical and Best Lyrics/ Composition for an Original Musical in 2020. It’s easy to see why – the costumes, the tunes, the fun vibe; it’s all designed to delight.
About Bronco Billy
Emily Benjamin has been playing the alternate Sally Bowles in the award-winning production of Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club in London since it first opened in late 2021. She’s also popular for her amazing work in Bat Out of Hell and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The rest of the cast will be confirmed nearer the time.
Like the movie, the Book is by Dennis Hackin. The music and lyrics come from Chip Rosenbloom and John Torres, with extra lyrics by Michele Brourman. The magic is directed by Hunter Bird.
The creative team includes scenic design by Amy Jane Cook, costume design by Sarah Mercade, choreography by Alexzandra Sarmiento, and lighting design by Nick Richings. The sound design is by Andrew Johnson, illusion design by John Bulleid, fight and intimacy direction by Rachel Bown-Williams and Ruth Cooper-Brown of RC-Annie Ltd. The associate director is Amber Sinclair-Case and the music supervisor is David O, with associate production by Danny Hackin and casting by Will Burton.
The plot? It’s the year 1979, and life is difficult for a group of fast gun-drawing, trick-pony-riding, disco-dancing Wild West roustabouts and their travelling show. Then the troupe’s leader Billy meets the powerful Antoinette Lilly, a determined Manhattan heiress on the run to save her life. The adventure that follows is upbeat, unusual and enormous fun, exploring the universal themes of love, reinvention, the importance of family, and what it means to live the dream.
The message is clear. Wherever we’re from and whoever we are there’s a place where we can be whatever we want: strong and powerful, a dancing legend, a poet, performer or cowboy. It doesn’t matter what other people say – and that’s a fantastic message to take home with you.
