Cake: The Marie Antoinette Playlist description
Cake: The Marie Antoinette Playlist is back in London for a full season in autumn 2024, a killer of a show blending ballet, gig and musical into a fascinating romp through the scandalous life of Queen Marie Antoinette of France, the woman whose misdeeds helped spark a revolution.
The musical has already toured the UK to great acclaim, with a limited run at the West End’s Lyric Theatre that won hearts and minds in 2023, delighting everyone who saw it. Now it’s back and show fans are thrilled. If anything can redefine what musical theatre means, this production is it.
Re-imagining a true story
The real-life Marie Antoinette was accused of trying to defraud the crown jewellers by stealing a diamond necklace. The scandal that unfolded, along with her excessive spending, affairs, illegitimate children and disrespect for ordinary people helped end her reign. The show re-imagines this true story.
West End favourite Zizi Strallen (Mary Poppins, Strictly Ballroom) plays the leading role of Marie Antoinette, with Renée Lamb (Be More Chill, Six) returning as Jeanne.
The creative team for the show includes writers Morgan Lloyd Malcolm, who gave us Emilia, Tasha Taylor Johnson who worked on The Cat In The Hat, and Jack McManus. The set and costume design is by Sami Fendall, the lighting design by Joshie Harriette and the casting by Will Burton. Bronagh Lagan (Cruise) and Christopher Tendai (Closer To Heaven) join as director and choreographer, inspired by the original work done by Drew McOnie (In the Heights, Jesus Christ Superstar).
Ballet, musical or gig? It’s all three!
Stunning costumes, amazing hair and make-up, dazzling pop songs and unforgettable staging make this show special. No wonder Paul Taylor-Mills, artistic director at The Other Palace) is so chuffed to bring Cake to his venue for a full run, calling it a ‘genre busting musical’. Like him, we’re sure last year’s acclaimed try-out will blossom into an even bigger success.
