This is the critically acclaimed 2014 Watermill Theatre production, re-launching for a UK tour and West End run. It reunites the creative team of director Nikolai Foster (An Officer and a Gentleman), co-director and choreographer Nick Winston (Shrek the Musical), orchestrator and music supervisor Catherine Jayes (The Color Purple), and set and costume designer Matthew Wright, all boding well for a spectacular experience.
Carrie Hope Fletcher takes the starring role
Carrie Hope Fletcher (Cinderella, Les Miserables) plays Jane. She’s an actor, singer-songwriter, author and YouTube and social media star whose roles include The Crown Jewels, Sleeping Beauty, Caucasian Chalk Circle and the West End title role in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella.
Carrie has also wowed audiences in roles as varied as Young Eponine in Les Misérables at the Sondheim Theatre, then older Eponine and Fantine, plus War of the Worlds, A Christmas Carol, The Addams Family, Heathers The Musical, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and Mary Poppins. This is the perfect role for her, a rip-roaring legend of a musical stacked with show tunes everyone loves.
Based on the popular movie starring Doris Day and Howard Keel, Calamity Jane’s memorable score includes The Black Hills of Dakota, The Deadwood Stage (Whip-Crack-Away), Just Blew in from the Windy City, and Secret Love. Adapted for the stage by Charles K. Freeman and based on the screenplay by James O’Hanlon, the music is by Sammy Fain and the lyrics by Paul Francis Webster.
A classic musical, a talented creative team
This long-awaited return is co-directed and choreographed by Nick Winston (Shrek the Musical) with musical supervision from Catherine Jayes (The Colour Purple). The costume designer is Matthew Wright with lighting design by Tim Mitchell, sound design by Ben Harrison and casting direction by Debbie O’Brien.
