Cymbeline | Globe description

For the first time in a decade, Shakespeare’s late, tragic comedy of love and rebellion hits theatreland, on stage at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse and lit by candles to add even more atmosphere to an already wonderfully tense story.

What's the plot?

Cymbeline is the queen of ancient Britain. Her daughter Innogen marries against her mother’s will, in secret, and as a result Posthumus is banished to Rome. From his exile, he takes a bet on Innogen’s innocence, but he's playing a dangerous game. Rome is getting ready for war. Will Innogen bring peace to the two contrasting worlds?

The play, whose main themes are innocence and jealousy, was classified as a tragedy in Shakespeare's First Folio, but in modern times it's often thought of as a romance, comedy or even a tragi-comedy. Come along and see the magic for yourself, still fresh and entertaining more than 400 years after it was written, a compelling exploration of nature, nurture, and women who lead.
