Hansel and Gretel | Globe description

Hansel and Gretel is a traditional old German fairytale collected by the Brothers Grimm and published in 1812 as part of Grimms' Fairy Tales, the darkly delicious story book that changed the world of children’s literature. The stage version is back, this time at the Globe Theatre, in a production stacked with poetry, music, love and hope.

This is the perfect theatrical treat for people of every age who love an epic stage version of a beloved story, adapted by the Poet Laureate Simon Armitage. Come along to watch this gorgeously scary fairytale unfold.

What’s the plot?

The boy’s called Hansel and his sister’s called Gretel. Their dad’s a woodcutter, their mum makes bread, and they are as poor as church mice. The village where they live is destroyed by war, leaving the little family starving. The parents decide the only thing to do is set their children free to roam the forest where they might find food and have a better chance of survival.

Left to fend for themselves, Hansel and Gretel decide to find their way back home. But when they come across a trail of tasty treats and follow it to an old lady’s pretty house deep in the dark woods, things get a bit tricky. Will the weird old lady get her way or will the youngsters escape?
