J'Ouvert description
Re:Emerge – Fresh drama for a post-covid world
It's fantastic to see British theatre re-emerging from lockdown, and even better to see Sonia Friedman Productions announcing a brilliant season of brand new plays created for a new world. The RE:EMERGE season makes a space for dazzling new voices and fresh West End talent. It's an extraordinary trilogy of plays curated by Friedman, with the collaboration of Ian Rickson, the season's Artistic Director.
All three plays handle vital issues around rebuilding society, dealing deftly with structural inequality, climate change and the economics of truth in an age of false news. The season is supported by Arts Council England, enjoys National Lottery funding, and is designed to support and celebrate the theatre-makers of the future. There's a real treat in store for those of you who adore classy theatre and love to have your imagination exercised. Not to be missed!
What's the story behind J'Ouvert?
The fabulous plot of J'Ouvert takes us to the Notting Hill Carnival, where we meet Jade and Nadine. This should be their world, but they have to fight for a space in it. Mirroring centuries of Caribbean resistance, this gorgeous story is an inspiring examination of two friends who want to preserve tradition in a world where the female body is rarely safe.
