Matthew Bourne The Red Shoes description
The magic is back in town! A festive treat awaits you in the shape of Matthew Bourne's The Red Shoes, back in town for the first time since covid ended its 2020 run. Already a legend of a ballet, with some desirable awards under its belt, this production delights audiences every time.
What's the story?
Meet Victoria Page, who was born to dance. Talent-spotted by Boris Lermontov, the ballet mogul, she dances like an angel in a ballet composed by Julian Craster, inspired by the old Hans Christian Andersen children's story. Having fallen for Craster, Victoria is trapped between her love and Lermontov, who controls the dancing career she's so passionate about. Unable to decide, running to and from both men, she eventually falls under a train while fleeing from Lermontov.
Set in mid-19th century London, Monte Carlo and Villefranche-sur-Mer, this compelling story deep-dives into the themes of obsession, possession, and what happens when two very different worlds clash. This lush ballet will delight your senses while breaking your heart.
New Adventures' 23rd Christmas season at Sadlers Wells
A two decade ambition to bring the 1948 Powell and Pressburger movie to the stage has borne fruit for Matthew Bourne. This is the 23rd year in a row that his company, New Adventures, has delighted audiences at Christmas with a glorious ballet.
