Merrily We Roll Along tickets – Go back in time for a Sondheim and Furth classic
This great show sold out in no time at the West End’s gorgeous, intimate Menier Chocolate Factory. A runaway hit of a production and a musical revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furths’ popular tale, it embarks on an exclusive four month week season at the Harold Pinter theatre.
The Daily Telegraph called it 'dazzling'… and they’re not wrong. Merrily We Roll Along thrilled audiences just as much as the media and critics with its electrical, especially lively, fun feel. And it won the 2012 Critics’ Circle Best Musical award, a serious recommendation that served to make it even more popular. If you missed the show the first time round, now’s your chance. If you’re new to it, here’s the story.
Inspired by a play dating back to 1934 by George Kaufman and Moss Hart, Merrily We Roll Along is set in the entertainment business. The action kicks off in 1980 and travels back in time to weave a moving and poignant story featuring generous handfuls of cracking Sondheim tunes including Good Thing Going, Not a Day Goes By and Old Friends.
The plot revolves around Franklin Shepard, the main character, who was once a successful Broadway musical composer who abandoned his close friends and love of song writing to take his place as a well-known Hollywood movie producer. The show picks up his story at the height of his Hollywood fame then looks back to reveal a series of snapshots of the moments that shaped the rest of his career and made him the man he is.
Who’s involved this time around? The extremely talented three-time Olivier award-winner Maria Friedman makes her directorial debut. And the cast includes Mark Umbers, whose role is described by The Guardian newspaper as ‘Impeccably played’, Damian Humbley, described by The Independent newspaper as ‘Terrific’, and the Olivier award winner Jenna Russell, described as ‘Superb’ by the Financial Times.
