Moulin Rouge! The Musical description
Moulin Rouge the Musical – The movie brought to life
Moulin Rouge! The Musical is due at the West End's magnificent Piccadilly theatre. Everyone who adored the 2001 film is bursting with enthusiasm for this fabulous musical version, a jukebox delight that's created a stir in the USA, a monster hit on Broadway and plenty of excited anticipation here in the UK.
This is the stage version of Baz Luhrmann’s fabulous Academy Award-winning musical movie. It brings to stunning life the sweeping sophistication of Paris in the late 1800s, and introduces us to the most famous dance hall in the world. Welcome to the Moulin Rouge.
It's the story of a young composer and a beautiful chanteuse and Can-Can dancer, whose troubled love story unfolds against a backdrop of sheer Parisian extravagance. It includes an awe-inspiring medley of more than sixty massive chart hits from stars like Edith Piaf, Whitney Houston, Sting, Gnarles Barkley, The White Stripes, The Eurythmics, Lady Gaga, OutKast, Lorde, Sia, Beyoncé, Pink and more, all rolled into remarkable show tunes. What a thrill!
You'll hear Lady Marmalade by Labelle, Because We Can by Fatboy Slim, Hips Don’t Lie by Shakira, So Fresh, So Clean by OutKast, Money by The Trashmen, Ride wit Me by Nelly, Burning Down the House by Talking Heads and many, many more, all given a very special Moulin Rouge treatment. The music alone is worth the price of the tickets!
The story? This is an extraordinary romance set in the quirky, artistic Montmartre Quarter of Paris during 1899. It's an extraordinary world populated by artists and bohemians and aristocrats, wealthy businessmen, boulevardiers, tarts and mademoiselles. The ambitious young English composer, Christian, is lovesick for the affections of the gorgeous singer and dancer Satine, and she has ambitions of her own, to be a respected actress. When their lives entwine at the Moulin Rouge, sparks fly. You'll meet the host of the venue Harold Zidler, the artist Toulouse-Lautrec, the world's best tango dancer and gigolo Santiago, Nini, and The Duke of Monroth, a wealthy club patron who thinks he can buy anything he wants, including Satine.
When the Manager of the venue promises Satine to the Duke in return for funding his next show, and it turns out The Duke holds the deeds of the building, things are not looking good for the star-crossed lovers. Satine’s future is in the Duke's hands. What happens? Come along and see.
The show is directed by the Tony nominee Alex Timbers. The book comes from the Tony award winner John Logan, and the music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements come from Justin Levine. The choreography comes from the Emmy nominee Sonya Tayeh and the set design from Derek McLane. Costume design is by Catherine Zuber and lighting design by Justin Townsend.
This isn't an ordinary love story. It's funny, and it's heart-warming, and you'll find you're on the edge of your seat as the couple struggles to make it through. See you there.
