My Master Builder description

Ewan McGregor, the Scottish actor and living legend who has thrilled audiences in numerous roles on TV, on stage and in the movies, is back in theatreland for the first time in 17 years. The brand new play My Master Builder is directed by the multi-award winner Michael Grandage, a classic combination designed to delight.

What's the plot?

The story takes place in a smart mansion in the Hamptons, an expensive summer resort where only the rich can afford to take their holidays. It's the evening of the 4th July, Independence Day, and the publisher Elena Solness is having a party to celebrate her architect husband Henry's latest building. The already-delicate balance of their marriage is disturbed by the arrival of Mathilde, an ex-student of Henry's who he'd once had an affair with. As the evening progresses, the couple is forced to face a life-altering reckoning, revealing the vulnerabilities exposed when we let ourselves love.

About My Master Builder

American screenwriter and playwright Lila Raicek, is the creator of the play, which is inspired by Norwegian playwright, director and 'father of realism' Henrik Ibsen’s classic The Master Builder. Raicek has a long list of plays under her belt including Fire Season, another piece inspired by a classic, this time the Bards's Measure for Measure. Tulla, a play about the artist Edvard Munch, Vertebrae, Love Lab, Night Float, Monkey Bowl, Blood Moon and many more complete the picture.

Theatre royalty plus a Hollywood legend

The play is directed by Michael Grandage (Disney’s Frozen, Orlando, My Policeman), working with Ewan McGregor for the first time since their collaborations on Othello and Guys and Dolls. McGregor's many TV and movie roles include the all-time classic film Trainspotting, plus Moulin Rouge, Star Wars, A Gentleman in Moscow, Fargo, Netflix's Halston, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Jerusalem – City of Faith and Fury, and many more.

The Set and costume design is by Richard Kent, the composer and sound designer is Adam Cork, and the play is produced by the Michael Grandage Company with MarketStall and Seaview Productions.
