Next To Normal – Bringing audiences to tears
The critics adored it, and so did audiences. Now the amazing Donmar Warehouse production of Next to Normal is due to transfer to the West End for a limited 14 week summer run. This Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning 2008 musical transfers to the West End in 2024, on at Wyndham’s Theatre from 18th June onwards.
What's the story behind Next To Normal?
Next To Normal tickets take you to a show that raised the roof at its UK premiere at the Donmar Warehouse, a new production by Michael Longhurst. But the stars were aligning way before then, before the Off-Broadway debut, when Next to Normal staged a handful of workshop performances and won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Score.
The musical opened on Broadway itself in April 2009, quickly nominated for an impressive 11 Tonys the same year, winning awards for Best Original Score, Best Orchestration, and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for Alice Ripley.
Next To Normal became the eighth musical to win a Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2010, when the Board members of the Pulitzer called it, "a powerful rock musical that grapples with mental illness in a suburban family and expands the scope of subject matter for musicals.” It took off on a US tour during the same year, which ended in 2011. Since then it has been on stage numerous times around the world.
About Next To Normal
Next to Normal is about a mum who’s struggling with bipolar disorder that’s getting worse, examining the impact her illness and its management has on her family. As you can imagine it’s heartbreaking but it’s uplifting as well, full of moments of joy as well as despair. Covering adult themes including grief, depression, suicide, drug abuse, and ethics in psychiatry, it’s an emotional rollercoaster you’ll love.
The musical has music by Tom Kitt and a book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey, the winners of the show’s Pulitzer and Tony for Best Original Score. The Donmar’s Artistic Director Michael Longhurst directs.
There’s music supervision by Nigel Lilley, design by Chloe Lamford, lighting by Lee Curran, sound design by Tony Gayle, movement, choreography and additional direction by Ann Yee. Plus video by Tal Rosner, musical direction by Nick Barstow, production management by Chris Hay, and casting by Anna Cooper. The West End cast will be announced nearer the time.
