Oedipus at the Old Vic
Welcome to the Old Vic’s production of the classic ancient Greek plot written by Sophocles. This is Oedipus, a fresh new adaptation by Ella Hickson. It’s due at the Old Vic for January 2025 and the starring roles bode well for the production as a whole, with a couple of glittering talents already well on their way to becoming legends.

What's the story behind Oedipus at the Old Vic?
‘Vengeance will be taken on the killer, then the land will be clean. The contamination will be washed away. The rains will come and the people will be healed.’
So what’s the story of this particular production of the classic story? Matthew Warchus, co-director, puts it perfectly. As he says, "Sophocles’ play, arguably the best-plotted tale ever told, is the original detective story. 2,450 years since it was written, we still find ourselves captivated by the intractable questions at the core of its drama: of the sometimes destructive outcomes in our quest for knowledge; how much we’re in control of our fate, or if we’re mostly living out a pre-written script that we’re completely powerless to change.

About Oedipus at the Old Vic
Rami Said Malek is a US actor known and loved for his TV role as computer hacker Elliot Alderson in the US Network television series Mr. Robot. He was awarded the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for the role. He also blew minds as Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury in the movie Bohemian Rhapsody, a role attracting many accolades, including the Academy Award for Best Actor. In 2019 Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
Indira Anne Varma is a UK actor and narrator whose movie debut and first major role was in Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love. TV’s The Canterbury Tales, Torchwood, Rome, Luther, Human Target, and Paranoid, and a role in Game of Thrones sealed her reputation.
