Emma Corrin is back in the West End playing the title role in Orlando, Virginia Woolf’s extraordinary classic novel. She gave an Olivier Award nominated performance in Anna X at the Harold Pinter, for which she’s been nominated for a Stage Debut Award for Best West End Performer. Corrin is no stranger to TV, playing the role of Lady Diana Spencer in The Crown. She also stars in the movie Lady Chatterley's Lover and the series Retreat. Make your way to the Garrick Theatre between 5th December 2022 and 25th February 2023 to experience the magic for yourself.
What's the story behind Orlando?
Orlando is a novel inspired by the life and times of Vita Sackville-West, Virginia Woolf's lover and friend. A hugely popular feminist classic, it is central to women’s writing, gender studies, and transgender studies.
The main character, Orlando himself-herself, was born male in Elizabethan times. Mysteriously changing gender at aged thirty, our hero-heroine embarks on a fascinating journey through five hundred years of history, meeting literary figures along the way on a search for the answer to a question that has long bedevilled humanity: how do we find the courage to be truly ourselves? About Orlando
MGC and Sand and Snow Entertainment are delighted to present Orlando, adapted by Neil Bartlett and directed by Michael Grandage. Olivier nominee Corrin leads a company of eleven in a new ‘bold’ staging, delivering one of the most surprising stories you’ll ever experience.
The novel has been adapted before. In 1989 director Robert Wilson and writer Darryl Pinckney created a single-actor production that premiered in the UK at the Edinburgh Festival in 1996. Miranda Richardson aced the role of Orlando. A movie version came out in 1992, with Tilda Swinton at the helm. And an adaption by Sarah Ruhl premiered in New York City in 2010. The book has even been turned into an opera. Its extraordinary appeal never seems to wane.
