Other Desert Cities description
The respected playwright and screenwriter Jon Robin Baitz is the creator of this very special show gracing the stage at the West End’s Old Vic. If you loved his international smash hit TV series Brothers and Sisters, you’ll adore this excellent piece of work.
Directed by the seriously talented Lindsay Posner, this brand new production is presented in-the-round for the first time, on a circular stage surrounded by the audience. Because it makes the action feel even more real and intimate, you’re in for an extra-special theatreland experience.
Other Desert Cities is billed as “a fierce and funny drama” which explores family politics, love, loss and redemption with confidence, humour, wit, brilliant observation and considerable verve.
The story? When the rebellious Brooke Wyeth returns to her the family home in Palm Springs at Christmas for the first time in six years, she arrives bearing shocking news. Her serious, respectable Republican parents Polly and Lyman, brother Trip and ex-alcoholic aunt Silda are horrified when Brooke reveals plans to publish a memoir about the family, especially when it’s clear she is hell bent on an embarrassing exposure of their painful and tragic past.
Brooke draws a line and dares her family to cross it. As you can imagine, her actions threaten to push the family’s already damaged relationship beyond repair. This is pure emotional drama, a modern theatre classic in the making.
The play premiered at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater in 2010, where sold out completely. It won a well-deserved Outer Critics’ Circle Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play, and won five nominations for the 2012 Tony Awards once it reached Broadway. The Broadway production, also directed by Joe Mantello, was named the "Best New Play on Broadway" by The New York Times, nominated as a finalist in the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and awarded a Drama League Award for Distinguished Play.
Do you love seeing shameful family secrets unfold? Head for the Old Vic in London’s theatreland for a dramatic, thought provoking, intelligent and enormously entertaining play.
