Patriots description

Patriots – Are you a hero or a traitor?

This is a brand new play from Peter Morgan, the writer responsible for Netflix’s The Crown, and Frost/Nixon. It’s directed by the Almeida Artistic Director Rupert Goold, also responsible for Ink and Spring Awakening.

The brilliant BAFTA-winning actor Tom Hollander delighted audiences in starring roles in The Night Manager and Travesties. Now he’s set to give another fine performance playing Boris Berezovsky once more, the ‘kingmaker’ and one-time ally who helped make Vladimir Putin into the man he is today. Also reprising their roles for the West End transfer is Will Keen, who plays Vladimir Putin himself. Luke Thallon plays the Russian ex-Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich.

Expect a brave and bold story of ambition, loyalty, love, and the dangers they bring. This is the West End transfer of a smash-hit production, and it’s on stage at the West End’s Noel Coward Theatre from spring 2023.

What's the story behind Patriots?

“If the politicians cannot save Russia, then we businessmen must. We have not just the responsibility but the duty to become Russian heroes”.

Roll back time to 1991 when the Soviet Union was falling apart. Officially the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, it had held sway in the region since 1922 as a flagship communist state containing fifteen republics, built on a centralised economic model. With the dawning of a new Russia and the end of the road for the old USSR, some people will win and others will lose. You might be a patriot today, but by tomorrow you could be seen as a traitor.

As a fresh generation of oligarchs fights to control the new Russia, we follow the billionaire businessman Boris Berezovsky on a journey from the president’s inner circle to becoming a widely-hated figure, the new nation’s public enemy number one.
