Punch description
James Graham, who gave us Dear England, has adapted a gritty true plot into a powerful piece of theatre that’ll leave you breathless. This is the memoir of Jacob Dunne, a story about just one tragic punch, in one thoughtless moment, that changed lives.
This is the world premiere of James Graham’s latest drama, following on from masterpieces like Dear England, Sherwood, Tammy Faye, and Boys From The Black Stuff. If you like your plays both heartbreaking and heartwarming, this one’s for you.
Joining Julie Hesmondhalgh as Joan, Tony Hirst as David, and David Shields as Jacob Dunne, we have Shalisha James-Davis as Claire (Casualty), Emma Pallant as Jacob’s mother (Cowbois), and Alec Boaden as Raf, DS Villiers and Sam.
Unflinching real life drama
A raw and honest exploration of masculinity and violence, the play is inspired by Jacob Dunne’s memoir Right from Wrong. This is the Nottingham Playhouse production, presented in association with KPPL Productions and Mark Gordon Pictures.
As a teen in Nottingham, Jacob would spend Saturday nights out drinking in the city centre with his mates, looking for trouble. One night he threw a single punch without thinking, someone died, and he was left facing terrible consequences. Eventually released from jail, the victim’s parents ask to meet him. In search of answers, they make an unexpected connection and Jacob’s life begins to change.
It’s a tragic story. But Graham’s treatment of it, and the involvement of Jacob Dunne himself as Production Consultant, delivers a final message of hope.

Punch is directed by Adam Penford, with production design by Anna Fleischle, lighting design by Robbie Butler, and sound design and composition by Alexandra Faye Braithwaite.
