Red Pitch description
Are you keen to experience a powerful home-grown play packed full of joy? Check out Red Pitch, the extraordinary winner of all five major ‘Best Debut Play’ awards. No wonder it’s being billed as the must-see play for 2024.
Tyrell Williams is the respected writer of Red Pitch, which has been widely celebrated by critics as a remarkable coming of age story. It’s been thrilling audiences at the Bush Theatre, where it enjoyed two sell-out runs, and now it’s transferring to the capital’s newest West End theatre, @sohospace.
An unprecedented award-winner
Red Pitch won all five major best debut play awards in an unprecedented sweep. It took Best New Play at the Off West End Awards, Most Promising Playwright at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards, Best Writer at The Stage Debut Awards, Most Promising Playwright at the Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards, and won the George Devine Award.
The cast is just as impressive. Kedar Williams-Stirling (Sex Education), Emeka Sesay (The Power) and Francis Lovehall (A Thousand Blows) are directed by Daniel Bailey in this vibrant, cleverly-staged production, featuring themes of brotherhood, ambition, girls, community, and what it means to belong. Shem Hamilton is the Understudy for Joey and Bilal, and Toyin Omari-Kinch is the Understudy for Omz and Bilal.
Serious creative talent scores high
Red Pitch's creative team is led by Director Daniel Bailey. Amelia Jane Hankin is the Set and Costume Designer, Ali Hunter is the Lighting Designer and Khalil Madovi is the Sound Designer/Composer. Dickson Mbi is the Original Movement Director and Gabrielle Nimo the Movement Director, with Heather Basten CDG as the Casting Director and Kev McCurdy as Fight Director. Gurkiran Kaur is the Vocal Coach, and Aaron Samuel and Abdul Kamara are the Football Consultants.
So much of so many young men’s lives take place on a football pitch. But what happens when the pitch that has been your home-from-home forever – where you’ve had a laugh, fought and forged lifelong friendships - is about to be demolished? Will three close mates keep on dreaming about stardom, or will their goals be destroyed along with the pitch?
As the Evening Standard said, this footie debut plays a blinder. Don’t miss it.
