Rose description

Rose – A one-woman tour de force

A woman in mourning examines her past in Martin Sherman’s moving drama about history, heritage and the power of memories.

What's the story behind Rose?

Martin Sherman’s critically acclaimed solo play summons up the Jewish 20th century from the perspective of one woman, Rose. It premiered back in 1999 at the National Theatre and on Broadway, and is more relevant than ever thanks to new waves of refugees whose plight is hitting the headlines. Maureen Lipman starred in an online production of the play when covid kicked off, now she’s back on stage to thrill audiences in person.

An Olivier Award winning actor, Lipman has performed with The National Theatre and the RSC, delighting the West End with her work on Messiah, Wonderful Town, Glorious, Oklahoma and more. Her role in Coronation Street has proved quite something. The award-winning playwright Martin Sherman is the man behind the stage plays Bent, Messiah, and A Mad House in Goa as well as the quirky Broadway Musical The Boy From Oz.

About Rose

Rose theatre tickets take you to a dark world where memories are painfully clear. Rose’s life has been extraordinary. Her terrifying and dramatic journey through life takes us from the utter devastation of brutal Nazi- occupied Europe to the American dream, all taking place during a century of unprecedented change where the only thing that remained the same was the violence that the strong impose upon those who are weaker.

A powerfully affecting reminder of the harrowing events that shaped the 1900s, it’s on stage at the Ambassador’s Theatre in the West End for a limited four week, 28 performance run kicking off on 23rd May 2023. The age recommendation is twelve and above. The play is beautifully directed by Scott Le Crass and designed by David Shields. The musical composition and Sound design come from Julian Star and the lighting design is by Jane Lalljee.

As the playwright Martin Sherman said, “Maureen Lipman’s performance as Rose is the greatest gift a playwright could ever dream of. Performance is perhaps the wrong word; she totally inhabits the role, the woman, the space, the language, the times, the events. I’m so happy that her astonishing alchemy has the opportunity to be witnessed again, for four weeks (only!) at the Ambassadors Theatre.”

Lipman herself feels just as passionate about her role. In her words, “I am delighted to be putting Rose back on her bench for a limited run at the Ambassadors in May. I thought I could never have the power to revisit Martin Sherman’s mystical, magical deeply philosophical and wildly funny creation, but Rose is in my blood and she has to be revived.”
