Sylvia – The story of one woman’s epic fight against injustice

The award-winning British singer Beverley Knight stars in Sylvia for 2023, previewing at the Old Vic Theatre on 27th January 2023. The show opens on 14th February and is on stage until 1st April. ZooNation’s brilliant play was originally commissioned to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War, on stage at the Old Vic for three weeks during 2018. Now it’s back.

Beverley Knight plays Emmeline Pankhurst. She created the dazzling role of Faye Treadwell in The Drifters Girl, and also wowed audiences as the hilarious Deloris in Sister Act. The rest of the cast includes Sharon Rose as Sylvia Pankhurst, Kelly Agbowu, Verity Blyth, Kimmy Edwards, Alex Gaumond, Jade Hackett, Todd Holdsworth, Stevie Hutchinson, Kate Ivory Jordan, Hannah Khemoh, Jaye Marshall, Razak Osman, Jay Perry, Kirstie Skivington and Ellena Vincent.

Kate Prince’s company ZooNation created Sylvia, co-written with Priya Parmar. There’s amazing original hip hop, soul and funk music by DJ Walde and Josh Cohen, plus more tunes and lyrics by Kate Prince herself. Set and costume design is by Ben Stones, lighting design by Natasha Chivers, and sound design by Tony Gayle.

Beverley Knight is a beloved award-winning singer and writer whose massive hits Shoulda Woulda Coulda and Keep This Fire Burning delighted millions. Her 2013 West End debut playing Rachel Marron in The Bodyguard made her an instant star in theatreland.

What's the story behind Sylvia?

Sylvia follows the life of Sylvia Pankhurst, a powerful political activist and the second daughter of Emmeline Pankhurst, who ran the famous suffragette campaign for women’s rights.

About Sylvia

Sylvia is both very funny and deeply poignant, a thrilling ride through the best-known events in suffragette history covering bombs, arson, Emily Wilding Davison dying under the hooves of the King’s horse, and more. It also reveals the extraordinary story of the Pankhurst family.
