The Cabinet Minister description
It dates back to the late 1800s but Sir Arthur Wing Pinero’s fabulous political farce, The Cabinet Minister, proves that while times may change, politicians don’t. This brand-new adaptation by Nancy Carroll is directed by Paul Foster, starring Caroll herself and Nicholas Rowe.
The story? Like so many before him, Sir Julian Twombley MP finds himself in big trouble. His son and wife have run up huge debts. His political reputation is balanced on a knife edge. The House of Commons is no longer a safe space, fraught with risk. And the newspapers are on his tail.
Can he save face and save his sanity? A sparkling story of marriage, blackmail and class ensues, and anything can happen. All the bets are off.
A cracking cast and creative team
Nancy Carroll plays Lady Twombley and Nicholas Rowe plays her hapless MP husband. Carroll has a host of theatre classics behind her, including plenty of roles for the Royal Shakespeare Company: in Henry IV directed by Michael Attenborough, in As You Like It directed by Greg Doran, The Winter's Tale, Twelfth Night, and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
She appeared with John Lithgow, Joshua McGuire and Nicholas Burns in another Wing Pinero farce, The Magistrate at the Royal National Theatre in 2012, and played the lead role of Felicity Houston in The Duck House by Dan Patterson and Colin Swash.
Nicholas Rowe has a star-studded TV and movie career behind him. He played Sherlock Holmes in Barry Levinson's film Young Sherlock Holmes, and again 30 years later in the 2015 movie Mr. Holmes. He has appeared on stage in Hamlet on Broadway, and in Tammy Faye in the West End.
They’re joined by George Blagden, Joe Edgar, Phoebe Fildes, Rosalind Ford, Dom Hodson, Dillie Keane, Laurence Ubong Williams, Romaya Weaver and Matthew Woodyatt, a cracker of a cast whose members bring this wonderful ageless farce to vibrant life once more.
The Set & Costume Designer is Janet Bird and the Lighting Designer is Tim Mascall. The Sound Designer is George Dennis, the Composer & Musical Supervisor is Sarah Travis and the Movement comes from Joanna Goodwin.
