The Cane description
On the eve of his retirement as a celebrated teacher, Edward is shocked to find that the reception has suddenly turned sour. His house is under siege by a group of angry youths and his daughter has returned home with a set of disturbing questions. He’s obviously not the most popular teacher in school anymore.
The Cane marks the end of 2018 for the Royal Court, a theatre that has championed playwrights from Simon Stephens to Jez Butterworth to Martin McDonagh. All three are Olivier Award-winning playwrights, the latter is also a Golden Globe and BAFTA winner for his latest screenplay Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. The Cane is the brainchild of another lauded playwright, Mark Ravenhill, who burst onto the theatrical scene in the 1990s with his contemporary works Shopping and Fucking and Handbag.
The Royal Court Artistic Director, Vicky Featherstone, directs this latest work in the larger of the Royal Court’s two spaces, the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs. Featherstone was recently named as No. 1 on The Stage’s 2017 list of the most influential theatre makers and individuals. She catapulted herself forwarded after so vehemently speaking out in the wake of the sexual harassment scandal that has swept the industry. Her other recent work includes directing Our Ladies Of Perpetual Succour and programming The Ferryman.
