The Duchess description

Jodie Whittaker is back on the London stage after more than a decade. The star of Doctor Who and Broadchurch plays the lead role of the Duchess in Zinnie Harris’ acclaimed version of John Webster’s 1613 play, The Duchess of Malfi. Top class English drama awaits you!

Zinnie Harris’ version of this classic tragedy was first staged at the Edinburgh Lyceum Theatre in 2019, a story that never grows old. She has reinvented the 411 year old play for the modern world. When a recently widowed woman falls madly in love with someone considered unsuitable and infuriates her family by marrying him, the punishments meted out are brutal.

A powerful role to reckon with

Jodie Whittaker was last seen on stage in Antigone at the National Theatre back in 2012. She is apparently ‘beyond delighted’ to return to the stage and thrilled with the role of the Duchess, billed as an incredibly powerful adaptation of John Webster’s harrowing drama.

A brilliant role for Jodie Whittaker

Jodie Whittaker’s extraordinary performance in Venus in 2006 attracted a string of award nominations including a British Independent Film Award nomination and a Satellite Award.

She went on to gather more critical acclaim in Wired (2008), Attack the Block (2011), Good Vibrations (2012), 2013’s Broadchurch, 2016’s Adult Life Skills, 2017’s Journeyman and Trust Me, also in 2017. She made history as the first female to play Doctor Who, ultimately voted the second greatest Doctor, coming second to fellow Dr Who legend David Tennant.

This production is bound to sell out fast thanks to its reputation and Whittaker’s involvement. It’s also directed by Zinnie Harris, another tick in the quality box. Don’t miss this extraordinary play exploring the nature of female rebellion and resistance.
