The Fabulist description
The West End’s Charing Cross Theatre is your destination for a dazzling new musical comedy blending an almost-forgotten opera with a fresh new book and lyrics from James Farwell. You’ll love this joyful, vibrant romp of a romance.
1700s Italian composer Giovanni Paisiello wrote The Imaginary Astrologer for Catherine the Great of Russia, her favourite opera. The Fabulist is inspired by his gloriously pretty opera, a brand new musical comedy experience to fall in love with. This is the show’s world premiere.
Lovely old music and a fresh modern plot
The plot is set against the backdrop of 1929 Italy, following a magician and heretic trying to escape Mussolini and the Catholic Church. When he finds safety on a busy film set his captivating manner grabs the attention of the young screenwriter Clarice. Can she marry a man whose life is basically an illusion? And will their love survive the regime?
