The Hills of California description

The Hills of California – The dream team strikes again

The Hills of California is a brand new play by Jez Butterworth, directed by Sam Mendes. It’s on stage at the West End’s Harold Pinter Theatre from 27th January 2024 for a strictly limited season. The Producers are just as impressive: Sonia Friedman Productions and Neal Street.

What's the story behind The Hills of California?

The Hills of California tickets take audiences back to 1976, a legendary super-hot dry summer that saw rivers drying up and reservoirs empty. The latest creative partnership between the highly respected Butterworth and Mendes, you’re guaranteed a classy theatre experience.

Welcome to The Hills of California. The Webb Sisters have come home to their mum’s failing guest house, where she’s upstairs dying. The guest house is called Sea View, but whatever window you look out of there are no sea views. This place sits away from the seaside fun. The town is Blackpool, the year is 1976, the hottest and driest summer for two centuries, and you can’t see the sand for the crowds.

About The Hills of California

The Webb family is played by four seasoned actors who are all well known and loved for their work on the stage and small screen. Laura Donnelly’s work on The Ferryman, The Nevers, and Outlander thrilled audiences. She’s joined by Leanne Best of Sweat, Ripper Street, and Line of Duty fame. Ophelia Lovibond played starring roles in Minx, W1A, and The Effect, and Helena Wilson wowed us in Vogue World, Jack Absolute Flies Again, and Rosencrantz & Guildenstern.

The other cast members are Bryan Dick, Shaun Dooley, Corey Johnson, Richard Lumsden, Natasha Magigi, Nancy Allsop and Sophia Ally, plus Alfie Jackson, Lara McDonnell, Lucy Moran and Nicola Turner.

The creative team comprises Rob Howell the Designer, Natasha Chivers the Lighting Designer, and Nick Powell the Composer, Sound Designer and Arranger. Ellen Kane is the Choreographer and Candida Caldicot the Musical Supervisor and Arranger, with Casting by Amy Ball CDG and Verity Naughton CDG as the Young Persons’ Casting Director. Zoé Ford Burnett is the Associate Director.
