The Pirates of Penzance description
Oh aaaar... The Pirates of Penzance are back in the West End, the English National Opera’s smash-hit version of Gilbert and Sullivan’s swashbuckling farce. 120 years after it was written, it is just as funny. Roll along for a whale of a time at the ENO.
One of Gilbert & Sullivan’s most popular comic operas, Pirates originally premiered in New York in 1879 and in London a year later. Audiences adored it, and they still do.
Expect classic comedy with lashings of farce and an ocean-load of fun. The songs have woven their way into the national consciousness, tap-along favourites like I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major General, A Policeman’s Lot is Not a Happy One and With Cat-like Tread. A Mike Leigh production you’ll love, it’s in town through Xmas and into the New Year.
A very silly plot
Young apprentice pirate Frederic falls in love with the Major General’s daughter Mabel. She falls in love with him. But the lovers face a rocky ride to happiness. Because Frederick was born in a leap year he only has a birthday every four years. His pirate apprenticeship lasts until he’s 21, which means he’ll be an apprentice for the next 63 years. Will he and Mabel ever marry?
A beautifully sung production
This brilliant revival is directed by Sarah Tipple and conducted by Natalie Murray Beale. Richard Suart, who has performed many comic roles of Gilbert and Sullivan operas and is a regular with the ENO, sings the Major General. John Savournin, who plays the Pirate King, is one of the UK's most versatile and charismatic performers and directors. ENO Harewood Artist Isabelle Peters sings Mabel, and the former Harewood artist William Morgan sings Frederic.
The costumes, the story and the music are captivating whatever your age, an exciting and colourful introduction to light opera, full of warm humour.
