The Producers description
Designed to offend as many people as possible, this outrageous comedy ends up not offending anyone. Brilliant. A major new revival of Mel Brooks’ musical adaptation of The Producers is on the West End’s festive list, not to be missed.
Make your way to the Menier Chocolate Factory for a fresh new version of a big comedy favourite, directed by the Tony Award-winner Patrick Marber, whose talent extends to the big screen and TV as well as playwrighting and directing.
Based on the outrageous cult comedy
Based on the classic cult movie, the original Broadway show snagged a record-breaking fifteen Tony nominations, winning 12 of them. This version also takes no prisoners as an “equal opportunity offender.”
Prepare for laugh-out-loud, totally outrageous, totally non-PC fun with music and lyrics by Mel Brooks, and a book by Brooks and Thomas Meehan. The story goes like this: two theatre producers decide to stage an almighty scam. They create a production so bad it is bound to fail, finding the worst director available to help it flop. Then they fraudulently over-sell their innocent backers shares in it, hoping to score a fortune. Sadly for them, their show proves a runaway success.
Outrageous exaggerated accents, caricatures of Jews, poking fun at gay people and laughing at the Nazis, the famous song ‘Springtime for Hitler’ sits at the theatrical pinnacle of naughtiness. You’ll be in fits over the desperate efforts of unlucky Broadway producer Max Bialystock, his mild-mannered accountant Leo Bloom and their ridiculous plan. Will they get what they deserve?
The original Broadway production opened in 2001 in the West End and blew audiences away, starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. It went off on hugely successful national tours of the US and UK, and the 2005 movie version smashed it all over again. It has been produced around the globe numerous times.
This is clearly a comedy with an enormous appeal. Bring your laughing gear along and prepare for epic, top quality silliness.
