The Score description
Trevor Nunn is on board for Oliver Cotton’s explosive new play about a composer, a king, and the mischievous musical plot that ends in more drama than anyone could have predicted. Brian Cox stars. Don’t miss the West End premiere of The Score.
Multi-award-winning actor Brian Cox (Succession) and his real-life wife Nicole Ansari-Cox (Deadwood) both star in the West End premiere of The Score, which delighted audiences at the Theatre Royal Bath where it gathered a load of excellent reviews. The critics loved it, as did the audience.
When the composer meets the king, sparks fly
The action involves the composer Johann Sebastian Bach, played by Cox, who reluctantly visits the court of the dangerous, ambitious Prussian King Frederick II in the year 1747. The men couldn’t be more different, and the play explores how Bach manages his time with the King despite their vastly different world views.
As the Age of Enlightenment dawns, the two men are in separate camps. Bach is deeply religious, the king is an atheist. Bach hates war, the king loves it. Bach studies the bible, the king studies war history. All the same, Frederick is in awe of the composer’s talent. But when he mischievously prepares a musical conundrum to confuse the composer and amuse his courtiers, the events that follow prove a lot more explosive than anyone imagined.
