Michael Harrison and the Really Useful Group are delighted to confirm that The Wizard of Oz, the vibrant musical based on the iconic story by L. Frank Baum, is set to play for a strictly limited season at the London Palladium for summer 2023, the perfect venue for a big, bold spectacular family musical.
Michael Harrison was responsible for producing the huge hit, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. He presents Curve's fresh new production of The Wizard Of Oz on Friday 23 June.
What's the story of The Wizard Of Oz?
Meet young Dorothy and her little dog Toto too. When a tornado whisks them both up into the air and away from their home, it lands them in the strange, weird and wonderful land of Oz. Determined to find her way home, Dorothy meets amazing characters along the way: the Tin Man, the Lion, the Scarecrow, the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch.
The history of The Wizard Of Oz
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the 1939 movie, was directed by Victor Fleming, starring Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley, Billie Burke and Margaret Hamilton.
The musical follows the plot of the movie, complete with music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by E.Y. Harburg, with additional music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and additional lyrics by Tim Rice. The orchestrations are by David Cullen, adapted by George Dyer.
The story comes directly from the gorgeous book by L. Frank Baum, based on the movie and produced with permission by Warner Bros, Theatre Ventures, and EMI Music Publishing.
The director is Nikolai Foster and the choreographer is Shay Barclay. The set designer is Colin Richmond, the projection designer is Douglas O'Connell, with costume and puppet design by Rachael Canning. The lighting designer is Ben Cracknell, with the sound design by Adam Fisher.
The show's creative consultant is Mark Kaufma, musical direction and supervision by George Dyer, and magic consultancy comes from Scott Penrose. The casting director is Kay Magson CDG, the props supervisors are Marcus Hall and Anna Josephs, and Anna is also supporting with costumes. Wigs, hair and makeup design comes from Elizabeth Marini.
