Two Strangers (carry a cake across New York) description

Dougal is a young, naive, and incredibly upbeat British man. He's flying to the Big Apple for the wedding of the father he's never known, his dad's second wedding.

At the airport he's met by the bride's sister Robin, an outspoken native New Yorker who doesn't take any nonsense and doesn't have time for dallying – she's already late for work. They don't like each other much at first sight but this is New York, there's a wedding on the cards and literally anything could happen.

This is a beautiful British musical from writers Jim Barne and Kit Buchan, directed by Tim Jackson. Jim Barne is a composer and orchestrator, half of musical theatre writing duo Buchan & Barne. He's written music for film, theatre and chart music acts. Kit Buchan is a writer, lyricist and poet whose poems have appeared in Clinic, The White Review, Magma and The Best British Poetry. It's a match made in heaven.

What's the story behind Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)?

Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) tickets whisk you to a gorgeous warm-hearted musical originally produced by the Royal & Derngate Northampton and New Wolsey Ipswich. Then called 'The Season', it was developed via the Stiles and Drewe MTI Mentorship Award. Following a sell-out run at the Kiln Theatre, Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) is transferring to London's Criterion Theatre on 4th April, on stage at the venue until 14th July 2024.

About Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)

The Observer says this "bittersweet fairytale in New York hits the spot”. The Guardian says it's "Funny, heartfelt but unsentimental, a charmer" and TimeOut says "Sam Tutty and Dujonna Gift shine".

Sam Tutty and Dujonna Gift star in this refreshingly cheerful two-hander musical. Tutty wowed audiences with his role in West End production of the musical Dear Evan Hansen, for which he won the 2020 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical. He was just 22 at the time, making him one of the youngest Olivier winners in the award's history. He's also loved for his role in Hollyoaks on TV, where he plays Timmy Simons.

Actor, singer and dancer Dujonna Gift is equally well respected, loved for fantastic work on a variety of hit West End musicals, including her recent appearance in Cameron Mackintosh's multi Tony and Olivier-winning musical Hamilton in the West End.

Tim Jackson is the Director and Choreographer, Soutra Gilmour the Designer and Jack Knowles the Lighting Designer. Tony Gayle is the Sound Designer and Sean Green is Musical Director. Lux Pyramid is the Orchestrator and Julia Horan CDG is Casting Director. Claira Vaughan is Associate Director, Hazel Holder is the Voice and Dialect Coach, Cáit Canavan is Costume Supervisor and Marcus Hall Props is the Props Supervisor.
