Waiting For Godot description

Waiting For Godot – With Lucian Msamati and Ben Wishaw

Waiting for Godot is back in theatreland in 2024, a fresh new revival. The show stars the acclaimed film, TV and stage actors Lucian Msamati and Ben Whishaw, both of whom come with immaculate acting credentials across the stage, small screen and big screen.

Now and again a play changes the rules. This is one of them. Waiting For Godot is undoubtedly one of the greatest plays of the last century, and this new production of Samuel Beckett's classic is directed by James Macdonald. It opens at the Theatre Royal Haymarket for a strictly limited season from September 2024 into 2025.

What's the story behind Waiting For Godot?

Waiting For Godot tickets introduce you to the marvellous Lucian Msamati, who plays Estragon in the new production at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. He and Vladimir are waiting next to a tree for a man named Godot, who keeps sending messages that he's on the way.

The men don't know who Godot is, why they're supposed to be meeting him, or when he'll be there. They just know there's the possibility of something magical happening when he arrives. Lucky and Pozzo join the men and talk more, and the new arrivals decide not to end it all after all.

Vladimir and Estragon don't feel they belong anywhere, they're rootless. They want Godot to enlighten them and the hope they feel at the prospect of the mysterious magical thing helps them rise above their hopeless existence. As they say, “Let us do something, while we have the chance… at this place, at this moment of time, all mankind is us, whether we like it or not. Let us make the most of it before it is too late!”

About Waiting For Godot

The play is written by Samuel Beckett and directed by James Macdonald. The rest of the creatives will be announced nearer the time, as will the remaining cast.

The main players are Lucian Msamati, who plays Estragon, and Ben Whishaw who portrays Vladimir. Msamati has a glittering acting career covering stage and screen. He delighted us in The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui and 1807- The First Act, Pericles (RSC), The Overwhelming, Walk Hard, Fabulation, Twelfth Night, Romeo & Juliet and many more.

Ben Whishaw is an award-winning British actor whose stage credits are many and varied, and whose movie credentials are immaculate. Think Mojo, Peter and Alice, Leaves of Glass, Hamlet and more on stage, plus Armando Iannucci's The Personal History of David Copperfield, Alice Englert's Bad Behaviour with Jennifer Connelly, Sarah and Polley's Women Talking. The list goes on.
