Waitress description
Waitress the Musical features wonderful show tunes and lyrics by Sara Bareilles, with a book by Jessie Nelson. It's based on the 2007 hit movie of the same name which was written by Adrienne Shelly, starred Keri Russell, and was written and directed by Shelly herself. You'll fall head over heels with the amazing story of small town waitress and ace pie-maker Jenna Hunterson, her dead end of a loveless relationship with her abusive husband Earl, and her efforts to escape a life she hates.
When Jenna becomes pregnant out of the blue she begins a torrid love affair with her handsome young married gynaecologist, Dr. Jim Pomatter. Jenna's pregnancy means she fears she might have to abandon the dream of opening her own pie shop. And Dr Jim isn't her saviour. She needs more than a mere lover to support her escape.
When she spots a pie competition with a grand prize, she's inspired. Supported by a crew of eccentric waitresses and loyal customers, Jenna's secret ingredient soon becomes clear – it's actually courage, and that's exactly what she needs to rebuild her life.
The original production of Waitress premiered at the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, USA, during the summer of 2015, directed by Diane Paulus and choreographed by Chase Brock. It starred Jessie Mueller as Jenna and Joe Tippett as Earl, and made its Broadway debut in spring 2016. The show was brought to Broadway by an all-female creative team, and was nominated for four Tony Awards including Best Musical. The response from the critics was excellent.
Variety called it a “delicious tale that's not simply about getting Prince Charming, but getting its heroine to take action and discover her worth!" If you love nothing better than a recipe for happiness in unexpected places, this one's for you. In autumn 2017 the show took to the road and went on tour, and now it's due in the West End. What a treat!
If you love the show's 42 show tunes as much as we do, you can experience it at home thanks to Sara Bareilles' fifth studio album, What's Inside: Songs from Waitress. It debuted at number ten in the American Billboard 200 chart in its first week. The album's lead single, She Used to Be Mine, proved a massive digital hit in autumn 2015, and the original Broadway cast recording was released digitally in summer 2016.
Broadway’s smash hit musical Waitress enjoys its West End premiere at the Adelphi Theatre in February 2019. The anticipation is already mounting. It's directed by Diane Paulus and the choreography is by Lorin Latarro. It is the first Broadway musical in history to have four women in the top four creative roles. And it is quite simply magical. Book yourself seats the moment they are available and you won't miss out.
