Walden description
Re:Emerge – Fresh drama for a post-covid world
It's fantastic to see British theatre re-emerging from lockdown, and even better to see Sonia Friedman Productions announcing a brilliant season of brand new plays created for a new world. The RE:EMERGE season makes a space for dazzling new voices and fresh West End talent. It's an extraordinary trilogy of plays curated by Friedman, with the collaboration of Ian Rickson, the season's Artistic Director.
All three plays handle vital issues around rebuilding society, dealing deftly with structural inequality, climate change and the economics of truth in an age of false news. The season is supported by Arts Council England, enjoys National Lottery funding, and is designed to support and celebrate the theatre-makers of the future. There's a real treat in store for those of you who adore classy theatre and love to have your imagination exercised. Not to be missed!
What's the story behind Walden?
What is Walden about? NASA botanist Cassie has just returned from a 12 month mission to the moon. She meets her estranged sister, Stella, an ex-NASA architect, in the remote woodland cabin she shares with the climate activist Bryan. As the sisters attempt to mend their relationship, which was damaged by an old rivalry, the same wounds come to the surface.
About Walden
Walden is a hugely clever debut play by Amy Berryman, directed by Ian Rickson who is loved for his work on Jerusalem and Uncle Vanya. It stars Gemma Arterton from Quantum of Solace, Fehinti Balogun from Juliet, Naked and Lydia Wilson, who made brilliant waves in The Duchess of Malfi.
